a haul of a different sort

Last night I was pondering over this blog, thinking about how I have had it for ages but never really have gotten into posting on a regular basis. I actually quite like writing, so this blog is a nice little 10 mins out of my day. I think it should be a regular thing :) This posting is about books, so if you aren't into that sort of thing feel free to skip over this one!

While I was visiting home I made a quick stop at the bookstore, picking up 3 books. The first is part of a series I have been reading for awhile, the House of Night. I got Untamed, the 4th book. The House of Night is like a mixture of vampire saga with Harry Potter - it's about these vampire's who go to a school together, but they possess witch qualities too. It's a unique mix, and interesting even though it's completely a tween series - reading level of about 8th grade. I recommend it though if you are into that type of story.

The second book is The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. I have read two of his other books, The DaVinci Code, and Angels and Demons. The DaVinci code was FANTASTIC! If you haven't read it I strongly recommend it. Even if you have seen the movie, and didn't particularly enjoy it, I would still try out the book. I have found that movies rarely match the strength of the book, so I never judge a book by its movie counterpart.

Angels and Demons wasn't that great. I read it years ago, so I don't really remember it but it didn't grab me the way I like a book to. If I remember correctly, Angels and Demons was a prequel to The DaVinci Code, and The Lost Symbol is a Sequel. It was number 1 on the New York Times Best Seller List for 6 weeks, and stayed near the top. I'm excited to read this one.

The last book I picked up was one I had never heard about - it's called Need, by Carrie Jones. The sales clerk at the bookstore recommended this one to me as I was checking out, so I figured I would give it a try. I don't know much about it, but I'll let you guys know if it is any good.

If you guys have any books you would like to recommend I am all ears! Leave a comment if you would like :)

1. Something Borrowed
2. Something Blue

Both by Emily Giffin

They are quick reads and are soooooooooooo good!!! let me know what you think of them. Everyone that's read them, has loved them!

She also has one out called Baby Proof which I haven't read but heard it's just as good as the other two. Love Love Love these books!!

Hoep you get a chance to read them!

Xoxo,
Monica

Love the House of Night books, even though they're clearly aimed at tweens. You should definitely read all of them, they get better as they go along x

I think you will love Need. I have read it as well as many of the other books you have listed here and have talked about previously on youtube or twitter! I too love the fun easy reading of the tween books as well as adult level books (I'm 34) Can't wait to hear what you think of both The Lost Symbol (I loved it, one of the best of his books) and Need!

I love Dan Brown's books!

I really recommend getting the slightly more expensive illustrated versions. They have pictures of every painting, sculpture, building etc. mentioned by Dan Brown in them and it makes it a lot easier to understand ALL of what he is talking about, every single reference :)

Hope you enjoy The Lost Symbol!

Ooh, how awesome that you decided to do a blog post, I love it! I think you once had us vote in one of your videos on whether you should do a book related vlog? I think you totally should! :D
Books for me are like what make up means to you sooo I might have a recommendation or two, hehe!
Firstly, I would definitely recommend Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver, the latest YA hit which just came out! It's really an amazing book which makes you think and really stays with you, I think everyone should read it!
I also reeeeeally enjoyed The Luxe series - it's like historical Gossip Girl, lol, but great reads!
A Match Made in High School was also reeeeally good and most of all hilarious!
Have you read any books by Sarah Dessen? She's an amazing writer and I've already read Along for the Ride and Just Listen - both were great and absolutely lovely!
Oooh and I definitely recommend Wish by Alexandra Bullen (beauuuutiful cover!) or Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway - the latter was amaaaazing!
That's just the stuff I've read and you might find interesting!
If you're more into vampires and such, then I know the VAMPIRE ACADEMY is really popular and HUSH, HUSH and FALLEN, those books are huge!
Ooh, I could go on foreeeeever, but this should be enough for now!
I'm so glad you decided to do a book post and I hope you'll do a book vlog soon too, that'd be great!
Happy reading!!! :)

ps: Oh and Monica mentioned Emily Giffin - I haven't read the Something Borrowed/Blue books, but I've read Baby Proof and Love the One You're With by her and they were both great! They're chick lit though so it really depends which genre is your favourite! :)
As for Dan Brown - I've read all his books bar the new one and I don't think I will as my boyfriend (who's a fan of his) was really disappointed by it. Hope you enjoy it though, let us know how you liked it!

Oh and it would be totally AMAZING if you started posting reviews, ha!

I'm not sure whether you're up to trying out something different, but if you are then I would recommend the following:
1-The life of Pi by Yann Martel
2-The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche
3-East of Eden by John Steinbeck
These are just 3 of my favourite reads. I love books! :)

I love reading too! I'm currently reading Gone with the Wind. So far I like it but I'm not that far into it. A website that was recommended is http://www.goodreads.com It allows you to peruse books, rate the ones you've read and get recommendations from your friends. Very fun.

I absolutely love The New York Regional Mormon SIngles Halloween Dance by Elna Baker. She's a hilarious writer and I'm not Mormon or anything but I still totally loved it and found it hilarious. It's just about her search for love in her 20's and for finding her niche in life.

I also have loved Dear John and The Last Song. Not sure if you have read those or not cause I know you and Blair vlogged about the movies, but I thought the books were really good.

I'm reading them at the minute and enjoying them, I managed to get the first 8 books for £8.99 on the book people website, I don't know if America have an equivilent. Also Artemis Fowl is an amazing teen book, but seriously it is awesome, check it out.

I am currently reading Angels & Demons!

My few suggestions are all by Malcolm Gladwell, which I am pretty sure you have heard of.
1. The Tipping Point
2. Blink
3. The Outliers

Really great books. And I love the whole Confession of a Shopaholic series. And The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom.

I really want to get LA Candy, Sweet Little Lies, and Skinny Bitch. Have you read any of those?

I second Time Traveler's Wife, also the Shopaholic Series, Devil Wears Prada, Schooled and I also read some non-fiction. Right now, Kelly Cutrone's book, and Ivanka Trump's book. I could go seriously go on. And for me, I have a Kindle so I no longer carry 3 books at a time. It might help lighten your purse.

Two good books that you might like.

Fairest, by Gail Carson Levine. It kind of reminds me of The Other Boleyn Girl, but less racy.

Devil in the White City is kind of like The DaVinci Code, but it's kind of creepy.

I liked both of these a lot, and I love your blog!

Thanks.

Elle, you have to, have to, HAVE TO read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It the BEST book in the whole wide world. I have read it 5 times since I first read it last July. It's sci-fi and AMAZING! It's not just me either. Everyone I've met who has read it has also loved it. You have to at LEAST look it up on the internet. And they're going to make it into a movie. In 2011. (I know you <3 Twilight so this may sway you: Stephenie Myer said the Hunger Games is "Amazing!")

Jacqueline Wilson also has some really, really good books that I think are SO GOOD even though they're aimed at tweens. So good! The author is British so she uses British words which I think makes it even cooler :P

And I really like "Dear Canada" books. They're written like the diaries of 11-12-13 year old girls (Again - aimed at tweens :) in significant times in history. (Halifax Explosion, the Spanish Flu epidemic, Railway buildings, everything!) They have Dear America too which might be more interesting. I like them because they're easy to read but you can learn about history :)

I loved all 4 of Dan Brown's books, especially Da Vinci Code and Digital Fortess(which you should totally read). I haven't heard the best reviews about The Lost Symbol, but I'm going to read it when it comes out in paperback version(hardcovers are too bulky for college classes + work every day). "Et us know what you thought!!

My aunt, who often purchases things for me as if I'm still a freshman in high school, gave me a couple of books in the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. They're definitely written for a younger audience (high school level), but the two I read (Vampire Academy and Frostbite) were surprisingly interesting. They're not literary masterpieces, but we all need a light read now and then!

Another author I've enjoyed is Sarah Addison Allen. Garden Spells and The Sugar Queen were both good books from her, they're a little more adult, and she writes stories that seem to say "everyone has a little bit of magic." There are some supernatural elements to them, but I wouldn't call it witchcraft.

Generally when I have time away from grad school to read for fun, I try to keep one light read and one book that challenges me to think or is a classic that I missed (or am rereading) from high school or college lit. I browse Barnes & Noble's website and use their categories to build up a list of recommendations and such along these lines and choose the other "just for fun" books more or less by the cover. :)

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult!
It is my all time favorite book.
It will open your eyes to how high school is for some people! i absolutely loved it. and hope you will read it! Its amazing! :)

the house of night series are good but there is a lot more sexual content in the later books to come, so i don't really think it's aimed towards tweens i think it's aimed towards teens. you might want to mention that in case your younger readers pick it up and their parents find it inappropriate.

I LOVE that you did a book blog! I read a lot as well... Have you read any Sophie Kinsella? She's wrote Shopaholic, which I wasn't too crazy about, but her other stories are awesome. I love Undomestic Goddess and Remember Me. Also, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series is a good quick tweeny read.

Ps- I read Twilight because of you! I'm not really a fan movie-wise, but I liked the story, and your vlogs gave me the extra push I needed to try the book. Kind of loved it, not gonna lie :)

The DaVinci Code was such a good book, but I never got around to reading Angels and Demons. You'll have to report back on what the Lost Symbol is like.

The book Need is actually pretty good! The second one just came out but, I'm not sure about the title right now...

Anyway, judging by the other books you mentioned, I think you should defintly check out the new title, Beautiful Creatures. It's another one of those supernatural romance type books. It's really good if you're into that type of thing.
Also, I also reccomend any books by Sarah Dessen. Her books are very realistic and deal with things that I think are really inportant and that some authors are scared to talk about. She is actually the author of the books that inspired the movie 'How to Deal' with Mand Moore.

she wants to hide from the world, but when a stunningly handsome new guy arrives at school, she cant seem to keep away. falling in love with Damen is dangerous - hes not what he seems. but if Damen is her destiny, how can Ever walk away?

by the way her sister isn't haunting her she is just decided not to move on to heaven and stay with her sister

i love this book and cant wait to get the next one called "blue moon" where she has too chose between her true love or to let him die and bring her family back... theres more info on Alyson noel's website

i also love "hush hush" but i cant tell you much about that because I've only got one of those samples out of a mag but its well good ...

Oh this is just fantastic!
You have always given me great advice with makeup and hair, and I can finally give YOU knowledge of what I know in return...

I'm sure you've either read or heard of many of these titles already, but whatever. :)

1) The Hunger Games (How could this NOT be on this list?)

2) Vampire Academy (I was a bit iffy about this
series at first, but I can tell you I LOVE this series! Everything a book needs. Beats House of Night by a landslide.)

3) Airhead and Being Nikki

4) The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series (Maybe it was you whose mentioned it before? Any who, I adore these books. Written for younger audiences, but fun nonetheless.)

5) Wake and Fade (Dark, scary, romantic, so beautiful.)

6) Confession of a Triple Shot Betty (Hilarious)

7) Hold Still (Beautifully written and just everything!)

8) Get Well Soon (On my top-ten list for sure.)

9) The Truth About Forever (One of my favorites... You'll see why)

10) Beautiful Creatures

I seriously hope you consider picking up at least one of these many titles... I more than just LOVE them. They mean a whole lot to me too. Books are something that links me to certain memories of my past. For example, when my grandma died, (Whom I loved so much) I always had Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty in my hand which always made me laugh. Get what I'm saying? They all remind me of something. Something sad sometimes, but something great.
Well, I hope you enjoy!

Love, Hannah

P.s. Holy crap you're cool! :)

haha wow :) I suggested that you do a video on your favorite books on youtube and then i look on here and ta da!

I've read the house of night series and just by hearing that you like them I have an immense amount of books to tell you that you might love.

1.) The Immortal Series. A girl mentioned them on here (the book about Ever)

2.) Vampire Academy books. Definitely amazing. And definitely in line with Twilight. Twilight, House of Night and the Vampire Academy books are great. Hard to decide which series are the best.

3.) A girl commented and she mentioned Sarah Dessen. She's absoltely amazingg. She's a North Carolina author and she's great. Personally I think her novels relate to girls anywhere from 16 and older. Just because of the experiences that normally takes a little bit of maturity and experience to fully understand. But anyway, her books are typically love stories. But they aren't your typical love story. All of her books have a twist on them, but a good twist. Most of the time. Her novel Lock and Key's twist was sad. But the novel was great nonetheless.

4.) SARAH DESSEN! [ I had to repeat her ;) ]

5.) Nicholas Sparks. All of his novels! ENOUGH SAID ;)

6.) The lovely Bones. Yes the movie just came out not long ago. I didn't watch it BUT I did read the book. The book wasn't the best novel, but of course it's a novel about a girl being raped and killed. But it's a touching book definitely. And definitely worth the read.

7.) The Last Lecture (another touching book). The Last Lecture is about a college professor who was diagnosed with cancer. He has three small kids and basically the novel is about his last lecture that he wants to give to his kids and his students. It's very sad and emotional. But defintely great!

8.) Just a couple more novels that I don't have much to say on except that they are good :)

If I stay
Kissed by an Angel
Wake, Fade, and Gone
The Hunger Games
There are alott more that I could tell you but basically the best thing to do is say "hey google tell me some great books" or "hey google tell me some great books that appeal to teens". Clearly, you are not a teen. But, hey if you like twilight and the house of night series other teen novels should appeal to you :)
Or, you could just look to barnes and noble. :)

I second, third, fourth?, the vote for you to read The Hunger Games, it keeps you at the edge of your seat.
If you lean towards Paranormal I think you'd also like these -
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
Beautiful Creatures (someone else mentioned it)
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

I only started reading this series because of the movie that came out recently, but I thought that since you are into the Twilight saga and the House of Night series (which is awesome!) you may take a liking to this. This is again around middle school asged reading level but still a good plot to the story. i hope u enjoy them!

I would recommend any nicholas sparks book, I just got into reading his books a few months ago and I can't stop, he's amazing!!! My favorite so far is a tie between dear John and the last song. And I'm in the middle of reading The notebook right now and a walk to remember is next :)

The shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella! I've only read the first one which is called Secret dreamworld of a shopaholic (renamed confessions of a shopaholic for the film). The book is amazing, the film was not as good. Her other books are great too: Remember me, Undomestic Goddess & Twenties Girl.

HI Elle!
I agree with a lot of the other followers you should definitely read The Time Traveler's Wife and The Hunger Games. Also you should try The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. It is amazing. I also just finished reading the Immortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. The 1st book in it is called City of Bones and it is really good too! They are so hard to put down!

I don't know whether you've heard of the Fever serie by Karen Marie Moning. I figure if you love Twilight and you enjoy reading paranormal series (just watched your vid on Easter basket), you might like this serie. There's a lot of noise about it for people who like paranormal romance. 20th Century Fox even optioned for the right to make them into movies. And... the heroine is a bubbly blonde 22-year-old southern girl. (stuck in the middle of love interests from 2 hot men...LOL) I actually thought of you when i read the book the first time.

It's a series of five books. In reading order, the titles are
1. Darkfever
2. Bloodfever
3. Faefever
4. Dreamfever
5. Shadowfever (Not yet released)

Would love to hear your thoughts on them if you decide to read them.

Love all your videos!
Best wishes and Happy Reading!

Omg.. you should really read Kissed by an Angel... it's an amazing book,, like it made me cry. It's not a like totally romance book. it has tons of mystery to it but its great. If you get the chance to read it you should. The back of the book says :

A love beyond life.....a danger beyond doubt. When her boyfriend Tristan, died, Ivy thought she'd lost everything, even her faith in Angels. But now she's discovered that hes her guardian angel-his presence so strong that she can fell the touch of his hand, the beat of his heart. Ivy needs Tristan now more than ever because he knows shes in terrible danger. Only Ivy's guardian angel can save her, now that his killer is after her. But if tristan rescues ivy, his mission on earth will be finished, and he must leave her behind FOREVER. Will saving ivy mean losing her just when hes finally reached her again ?
